This just in and worth sharing:
Hi Rich,
One “high” so far this year was a powerful witness on “you shall not kill.” Last week we studied this commandment and we had a very special guest, a mother whose son died from school violence. He was beaten by a bully 10 years ago, and one punch hit his head so hard that he actually died. This mom has spoken to many schools about promoting kindness and preventing bullying. It was AWESOME! The kids were captivated by her video on her son, and also on her extremely detailed and well put PowerPoint presentation. Her son was a sophomore when he died…and the kid that bullied him was an 18 year old senior that actually went to prison for this…he had no idea that his actions could lead to something like that. This is probably not something the mom would want “media” to pick up on as it happened 10 years ago and the kid is now out of jail. The cool thing was that this family’s former youth minister is now a member of our congregation and was a familiar face for this mom as he’s involved in our middle school ministry. It’s great to catch those “retired camp counseling/youth ministry types” and have ‘em involved.
Anywho…school violence story hitting home here in Rochester. I told some colleagues about what a blessing this mom was to so bravely share her story. It deeply impacted our youth and their discussions.
God bless,
